And what of Pen Y Garn Cottage itself?
Pen Y Garn offers boutique style 4 star accommodation in Foelgastell, Carmarthenshire for up to 4 guests. The cottage is just a few minutes’ drive from the end of the M4, surrounded by the lush green fields of traditionally farmed countryside, offering the perfect balance of a tranquil rural getaway, with easy accessibility to the coast and road networks.
The accommodation downstairs comprises a fully equipped modern kitchen with separate dining area. The living room has comfy leather sofas, a wood-burner and TV/DVD. Double doors open out onto the gravelled terrace with a barbeque, and outdoor table and chairs – perfect for unwinding with some al fresco dining and a glass of wine as the sun sets. Additionally there is a wet room downstairs with walk-in electric shower, and there is wireless broadband available throughout the property.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms. The red room has a king-size bed, and the blue room has a super-king bed (which can also be converted to twin beds if you wish).
One of the charming aspects of Pen Y Garn is its location in part of what was once a small quarry with lime kilns. The outside has been lovingly converted into what is now a mature cottage garden with an ornamental pond, numerous feeders to attract the birds, and delightful woodland beyond the garden which guests are welcome to walk into.
Many of our guests have commented on the fact that the cottage setting is so tranquil, with the sheltered terrace being the perfect place to just sit and relax and watch the comings and goings of all the different species of birds and wildlife in the nature-friendly garden.
A great benefit of our location here at Pen Y Garn is how central we are to an array of different attractions and places of interest – something to please everyone’s tastes!
If beautiful gardens are your passion we’re just 5 minutes away from the National Botanic Garden of Wales. At over 500 acres in size it includes lakes, a walled garden, a bog garden, a sculpture garden, the tropical garden, the apothecaries’ garden, plus the stunningly designed Great Glasshouse set into the ground, protecting some of the most endangered plants in the world – to name but a few of the different types of garden to see there.
A little farther afield Aberglasney House and Gardens showcases one of the finest gardens in Wales, including its two walled gardens, a cloister garden, a small lake and various wooded walks. It has been named as one of the RHS’s top Ten Formal Gardens to visit in 2015.
Castles and stately homes offer popular days out for our visitors, and we are spoilt for choice here in South Wales. Kidwelly Castle has been well preserved and visitors can enjoy stunning views from its towers and ramparts, and a real sense of history with access to ancient dungeons and secret rooms.
Dinefwr Park and Castle, where Lord Rhys once held court, nowadays offers a glimpse into Edwardian Life with displays of the servants’ quarters in the recently remodelled Newton House, and you can explore the eighteenth Century landscape park and medieval deer park where there is still a herd of fallow deer in residence.
If literature, arts and crafts interest you there are plenty of places to inspire you nearby. Laugharne on the estuary of the River Taf is famous for the Boathouse where Dylan Thomas lived for the last four years of his life, and wrote many of his major works, including Under Milk Wood. The site is now a heritage centre with a museum and bookshop, and the writing shed still contains Thomas’s original furniture and writing materials.
There are a whole host of art galleries to have a wander around, with many talented artists having made West Wales their home, with its inspiring landscapes and beautiful quality of light.
The National Wool Museum takes you through the spellbinding story of the woollen industry in Wales, right through the whole process from fleece to fabric, with a textile gallery showcasing the heritage of the different patterns and weaves from mills in Wales.
As well as the more formal local attractions we also have fabulous countryside on our doorstep here at Pen Y Garn. Within about a half hour drive we have a choice of beaches for you to enjoy : Bury Port Beach and Harbour in the heart of the award winning Millennium Coastal Park, with two sandy beaches, a brand new marina for a spot of boat-watching, and views of the Gower, Llansteffan with a sandy beach and views of the 12th Century Norman Castle, and Pendine, one of Wales’s longest sandy beaches, and home of the historic land speed record attempts.
Pembrey Country Park combines coast and country with 8 miles of golden sands, woodlands, lakes and wildlife trails, and we are less than an hour from the stunning Brecon Beacons if you’re looking for more challenging walking. Alternatively a visit to the Llanelli Wetlands Centre gives you the chance to see a fantastic array of different birds, moths, dragonflies, and wildlife with 450 acres of lakes, streams, and salt marshes – a bird-spotters’ paradise!
And of course, no holiday is complete without enjoying some local eateries whilst out and about. As well as our local pubs, some of our favourites include Wrights Food Emporium (which features in the Waitrose Good Food Guide), Y Polyn (which has 2 AA rosettes, and Egon Ronay Star and features in the Good Food Guide) and Sosban Restaurant – all of which focus on showcasing the very best of local Welsh seasonal produce.
We appreciate that sometimes it’s comforting to know what other people have thought of their stay here at Pen Y Garn, rather than just what we have to say! Here are some quotes to leave you with, from our recent five star Tripadvisor Reviews :
“Paradise in Wales! What a wonderful, relaxing, refreshing place! Close to services and sight-seeing, but surrounded by nature”
“A wonderful start to our UK holiday….. Pen Y Garn Cottage and our host, Mary-Ann set a standard that will be hard to meet as we travel around the UK and Ireland. From the personal greeting as we arrived to the fresh loaf of bread and Welsh biscuits awaiting us on the counter, Mary-Ann could not have made us feel more welcome. The cottage and its amenities are first class.”
“Perfect retreat! From initial booking to handing back the key at the end of my stay, Mary-Ann and Mike were the perfect hosts! The cottage was spotless, exceptionally welcoming and it was a lovely to receive some welcome gifts such as home-made bread – and my favourite Welsh bread, bara brith! The cottage itself is finished to an extremely high standard and was very clean and tidy. The wood-burner was used every night without fail because it was there!
I’ve not slept so well in ages – even the linen felt high-quality!
Mary-Ann and Mike made me feel so welcome and I would thoroughly recommend this little piece of Welsh paradise – very convenient location for West and South Wales, Swansea and the beautiful Gower. I really cannot say how comfortable I was and how I felt treated like a king!”
So, finally we would like to extend a very warm welcome to you from our little corner of Wales!
